Why use Passport Room
There are many ways to get a passport photo: a studio, a booth, a pharmacy counter, a phone app or a browser tool. Here is what makes Passport Room different, and — just as important — where the alternatives are the better choice.
What makes it different
Your photo never leaves your device
The AI background removal, face enhancement and print-sheet layout all run inside your browser. There is no upload step anywhere in the flow, so the most sensitive photo most people take — their own face at high resolution — is never sent to a server, an ad network or an app vendor. Once the AI models are cached, the tool even works with your network off.
Free, with no watermark and no account
Unlimited photos, unlimited exports, full 300 DPI resolution, no watermark, no sign-up. The details live on the free-forever page. If a photo tool puts its logo across the picture you need for a government form, it is not really free.
Exact presets instead of guesswork
The app renders your cut-out at the exact millimetre dimensions and head-height ratio of your country's standard — US 2×2 in, UK 35×45 mm, Canada 50×70 mm, China visa 33×48 mm, India and OCI sizes, Australia, Bangladesh and any custom size — at 300 DPI. See the size guide.
Works on any modern browser
Nothing to install. Chrome, Edge, Safari and Firefox on desktop or phone; WebGPU when available, WebAssembly when not. No storage, no subscription management, nothing to cancel.
How it compares
| Passport Room | Studio or booth | Typical photo app | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Photo leaves your device | Never | Yes (staff handle it) | Almost always uploaded |
| Cost | Free, unlimited | Paid per sitting | Free preview, paid download or watermark |
| Installation | None — browser only | You travel | App install + permissions |
| Country presets | Built in, plus custom sizes | Local standard only | Varies by app and paywall |
| Retakes | Unlimited, at home | Another paid visit | Unlimited, on-device |
| Prints | Print sheet at true scale | Provided | Depends on the app |
When a studio is still the better choice
Honesty requires the other column too. A professional studio is the right answer when your source photo is beyond saving, when a form demands certified studio paperwork, or when you simply prefer to hand the whole problem to someone else. And no software — Passport Room included — can guarantee that a specific office will accept a specific photo: lighting, expression, glasses and recency are judged by a human at the counter. The app is a very precise pair of scissors, not an approval stamp. Always check your country's official guidance before submitting.
FAQ
Is Passport Room really free?
Yes — the photo tools work without an account and no export carries a watermark. The free-forever page spells out exactly what is free.
Is a browser tool as accurate as a studio?
For dimensions, yes — the presets render at exact millimetres and 300 DPI, which is more precise than a physical trim. For lighting quality, a studio with proper lights wins; our home-photo guide closes most of that gap with a window and a plain wall.
Does it work on phones?
Yes. The tool is built for modern mobile browsers, with WebGPU acceleration where the phone supports it and a WebAssembly fallback where it doesn't.
