How it works

How to make a passport photo online

Four steps, about two minutes, and nothing leaves your device. The whole pipeline — segmentation, cropping, colour work and export — runs on the machine you are reading this on.

1. Upload your portrait

Use a front-facing photo taken in even daylight against a plain wall, with a neutral expression, both eyes open and nothing covering your face. A phone camera at arm's length is fine; a photo of a photo is not. The file is read straight into the page, so no upload happens.
2. AI removes the background

A MODNet segmentation model runs in your browser through WebGPU, or WebAssembly on devices without it, and separates you from whatever was behind you. You then choose a compliant background colour — white, off-white, light blue, grey or a custom shade.
3. Choose your country size

Pick a preset such as US 2×2 in or UK 35×45 mm and the photo is rendered at those exact millimetres at 300 DPI. Drag, zoom and rotate until your head sits between the on-screen guides, or enter a custom size if your form asks for something unusual.
4. Download or print

Export a full-resolution JPEG or PNG with no watermark for an online application, or build a print sheet that tiles several copies at true scale. Print it at 100% scale on photo paper and cut along the guides.

Size is only half of a compliant photo. Most authorities also require a recent image, a neutral expression with the mouth closed, both eyes visible and open, no shadows on the face or background, no sunglasses or tinted lenses, and head coverings only for religious reasons with the full face visible.

Frequently asked questions

Is Passport Room really free?

Yes. Every feature is free with no account, no watermark and no limit on how many photos you export. There is no paid tier to unlock.

Are my photos uploaded to a server?

No. Background removal, cropping, enhancement and export all run inside your browser using WebGPU or WebAssembly. The app has no photo upload endpoint, so your image never reaches us or anyone else. The only downloads are the AI model files themselves.

Will my photo be accepted by the passport office?

Passport Room renders the exact dimensions, 300 DPI resolution and head-height ratio a standard requires, but acceptance is decided by the issuing authority, which also judges lighting, expression, eyewear and how recent the photo is. Follow your country's official guidance and use a clear, current, neutral-expression photo.

Do I need to install anything?

No. Passport Room runs in a normal web browser on desktop, Android and iOS. The AI model files download once on first use and are then cached on your device.

How do I print passport photos at home?

Use the print-sheet option to tile copies of your photo at true scale onto one sheet, then print on photo paper at 100% scale with any fit-to-page or shrink-to-fit option switched off, and cut along the guides.

Can I change my clothes in the photo?

The outfit editor overlays a formal garment image onto your photo, which you position and scale by hand. It is a manual overlay rather than a generated body, and it should never be used to misrepresent your appearance on an official document.

Which background colour should I choose?

Most countries, including the United States, the United Kingdom and the Schengen area, require a plain white or off-white background. A few authorities accept light blue or light grey. Check your country's rules and pick the matching preset colour.
